Cryopreservation

What is the Cryopreservation of Embryo?

Embryo cryopreservation, commonly known as embryo freezing, is a technique used to freeze and store surplus embryos for potential future use. This process is typically integrated into in-vitro fertilization (IVF) programs.

In IVF, embryos are created by fertilizing eggs with sperm in a laboratory setting. Not all of the resulting embryos are transferred to the surrogate; some are preserved for future use. This process of storing extra embryos is called cryopreservation.

What is the procedure?

The main goal of embryo freezing is to preserve embryos for future use. To achieve this, it is crucial to keep the embryos in conditions that ensure their survival.

How can the embryos be used again?

The process of defreezing embryos is referred to as thawing. When embryos are required, they are removed from the liquid nitrogen container and placed in a water bath where the temperature is gradually increased. As the temperature rises, the cryoprotectants are released from the embryos. To minimize the impact of the departing cryoprotectants, a stepwise dilution process is employed.
