Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy

What is a hysteroscopy?

Hysteroscopy is a key procedure used to diagnose and treat the underlying causes of abnormal uterine bleeding. During the procedure, your surgeon uses a hysteroscope, a slender, illuminated tube, to get a clear view of the inside of your uterus. The hysteroscope is carefully inserted through your vagina, allowing the surgeon to thoroughly examine both the cervix and the uterine cavity.

Diagnostic hysteroscopy

A diagnostic hysteroscopy is used to detect structural abnormalities in the uterus that could be responsible for abnormal bleeding. Additionally, hysteroscopy can be employed to confirm findings from other tests like an ultrasound or hysterosalpingography (HSG). HSG is an X-ray dye test designed to determine if the fallopian tubes are blocked, a condition that can hinder pregnancy.

Operative hysteroscopy

Operative hysteroscopy is performed to treat any abnormalities found during a diagnostic hysteroscopy. Often, your healthcare provider can conduct both the diagnostic and operative procedures simultaneously, eliminating the need for a separate surgery. During the operative hysteroscopy, the surgeon uses specialized instruments to remove the abnormalities, which could be the cause of abnormal uterine bleeding.
