IUI (Intrauterine insemination)

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a fertility procedure where sperm is directly inserted into a woman's uterus to enhance the chances of fertilization.

The aim of IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) is to enhance the number of sperm that reach the fallopian tubes, thereby improving the likelihood of fertilization.

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) enhances the chances of sperm reaching the egg by positioning it closer to the uterus, but the sperm must still travel to and fertilize the egg on its own. IUI is generally less invasive and more affordable compared to In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).

When is IUI used?

The most common reasons for choosing IUI are low sperm count or reduced sperm motility. However, IUI can also be recommended for various other fertility issues, including:

Unexplained infertility, Hostile cervical conditions, such as issues with cervical mucus, Cervical scar tissue from previous procedures that may obstruct sperm entry into the uterus, Ejaculation dysfunction

How does IUI work?

Prior to intrauterine insemination, ovulation-stimulating medications may be prescribed, requiring careful monitoring to pinpoint the optimal time when the eggs are fully mature.

The IUI procedure is scheduled to take place around the time of ovulation, usually within 24-36 hours following the LH hormone surge that signals imminent ovulation.

The lab will first wash the semen sample to separate the sperm from the seminal fluid. Following this, a catheter will be used to directly insert the concentrated sperm into the uterus. This procedure enhances the number of sperm cells introduced into the uterus, thereby boosting the chances of conception.

What are the risks?

Using fertility medication during IUI can increase the likelihood of conceiving twins or more. Additionally, there is a minor risk of infection following the IUI procedure.

What is IUI’s Success Rate?

IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) is a less invasive and more affordable treatment compared to IVF. However, its success rates are generally lower. If you're considering IUI, it's important to consult with your doctor to explore all your options and determine the best approach for your situation.

Some couples prefer to try traditional or over-the-counter methods before considering infertility treatments.
